AI for E-commerce Support: Answer "Where Is My Order?" Forever, Automatically
Open any e-commerce support inbox and count. The overwhelming majority of tickets are the same five questions: where's my order, how do I return this, what size should I get, do you ship to X, is this in stock. Each is trivial. The volume is not, and neither is the expectation: online shoppers expect answers in minutes, at midnight, during your sale spike.
That's a job description for an AI assistant.
What gets resolved automatically
- Order status. The assistant looks up the actual order and answers with the actual tracking status, not a link to a tracking page. "It cleared customs yesterday, expected Thursday." This alone is usually the biggest ticket category.
- Returns and exchanges. It knows your policy, checks eligibility, and initiates the return with a label, end to end, no human touch, within the rules you set.
- Product questions. Sizing, materials, compatibility, care instructions, answered from your real catalog data. Pre-sale questions answered at the moment of intent convert browsers into buyers; the customer asking about sizing at 11 PM is trying to give you money.
- Shipping and stock. Do you ship to my country, how much, how fast, when is restock. Grounded in your live data so it's never confidently wrong (why grounding matters).
What escalates to your team
The design rule is the same one we apply everywhere: routine is automated, judgment is human. Angry customers, damaged-item disputes, anything involving goodwill gestures beyond policy, fraud smells, and any conversation where the assistant isn't confident. Escalations arrive with the full conversation and order context attached, so your team starts at the middle, not the beginning.
The sale-spike superpower
Human support scales linearly: double the tickets, double the queue. An AI assistant answers every customer simultaneously. Black Friday volume gets the same response time as a Tuesday in March. For seasonal stores this changes what peak season feels like, both for customers and for whoever used to spend December drowning.
Beyond the inbox
The same assistant works pre-sale on the storefront (a good product-question chat is a conversion tool, not a cost center) and post-sale on WhatsApp and social DMs, where a growing share of commerce questions actually arrive (WhatsApp automation). One brain, every channel, consistent answers.
Where to start
Pull your last 200 tickets and sort them by type. The top three categories are your automation roadmap, and they're probably order status, returns, and one product question that your product page fails to answer. Automate those, keep humans for the rest, and measure ticket volume in a month. We'll happily do that sort with you in a free assessment.
