AI for Trades and Contractors: Book Jobs While Your Hands Are Full
The trades have a built-in contradiction: the better you are at the work, the worse you are at the phone, because you're under a sink or on a roof when it rings. Every missed call while you're working is potentially a job going to whoever answered. You're literally losing work because you're doing work.
The four leaks in a trade business
- Calls during jobs. The big one. Homeowners with a burst pipe don't leave voicemails; they call the next name (the math: what missed calls cost).
- Evening and weekend inquiries. When homeowners are home noticing problems is exactly when you're off the clock.
- Quote follow-up. You quoted Tuesday, they went quiet, and chasing feels pushy so it doesn't happen. Meanwhile they were just busy, and the contractor who nudged got the job.
- Invoices. Work done, money owed, reminders awkward (we wrote up the fix).
What the AI actually does
Answers every call, especially the ones you can't. An AI voice agent picks up while you're elbow-deep in a job: describes your services, checks whether the postcode's in your area, asks the right questions (what's the issue, how urgent, send a photo), and books the site visit into your calendar. Emergencies get flagged and pushed to your phone immediately; routine work gets scheduled without you touching anything.
Handles WhatsApp like a second phone line. Photos of the problem, "how much roughly for X," booking confirmations, all in the channel homeowners already use (WhatsApp automation).
Chases quotes politely and forever. Every quote gets a follow-up cadence: a check-in after two days, another the next week. You win the jobs where you were simply the one who followed up.
Keeps the paperwork current. Every inquiry, quote, booking, and job note lands in one place automatically, so Saturday admin stops being a thing.
What about pricing on the phone?
The assistant quotes what's quotable (standard callout fees, fixed-price services) and refuses to guess the rest: "That needs eyes on it. I can book a free site visit Thursday afternoon." That's the honest answer a good apprentice would give, and it converts better than a wrong number. Judgment stays with you; the booking happens without you.
The one-person-band question
This isn't just for firms with office staff. It's most valuable for the solo operator, because you're the entire front office and you're unavailable eight hours a day by definition. The AI is the office you couldn't otherwise afford.
